  • Serve as an agent of the Canadian Education Organization for lifelong learning from early years and beyond.

Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS)

The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) was originally conceived in June 1945 as the Canadian Mathematical Congress. The founding members envisioned the Congress as a body dedicated to advancing mathematical development in Canada. In 1978, the organization was incorporated as a non-profit, charitable organization and adopted the name "Canadian Mathematical Society" to distinguish itself from other international mathematical congresses.

The CMS is committed to fostering new partnerships and collaborations with various mathematics users, including businesses, government agencies, universities, school and college educators, and other mathematical associations. Through these partnerships, the CMS aims to share experiences, work on collaborative projects, and enhance the perception and profile of mathematics across Canada.

Goal and Statement of Purpose

The primary goal of the Canadian Mathematical Society is to promote and advance the discovery, learning, and application of mathematics.

Statement of Purpose

  • To Unify and Support Canadian Mathematicians
By fostering effective communication, building a broad membership, sponsoring diverse mathematical activities, and forming partnerships with other professional societies.

  • To Support Mathematics Research
Through the dissemination of current research to both specialists and non-specialists, I am recognizing research achievements, and collaborating with research institutes, granting agencies, and users of mathematics.

  • To Support Mathematics Education
By engaging in joint projects with mathematics educators at all levels, promoting advancements in mathematical education, and partnering with provincial ministries of education and organizations dedicated to mathematics education.

  • To Champion Mathematics
Through initiatives that explain, promote, and increase the public understanding of mathematics, provide extracurricular opportunities for students, and foster partnerships with corporate, government, and non-profit organizations.

The CMS remains dedicated to these goals and purposes, continually working to strengthen the role and visibility of mathematics in Canada and beyond.
